Mercedes Schlapp's role as White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't an easy one. The White House's advisor to strategic communications Mercedes Schlapp has faced a myriad of issues. This includes a president who is also the director of his own communications as well as numerous legal issues that may disrupt the communications strategy. Schlapp However, she has never lost focus on her role. She is in close contact together with White House political affairs and the legislative team and policy shops and the wider communications department to ensure that the policies are implemented. Her focus to date has been on topics such as school safety, the opioid epidemic, infrastructure, trade along with other issues. In her current job she isn't in contact with many reporters. She gained attention when she was named as an option to succeed Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp has a tough job in her role as White House's advisor on strategic communications. The job can be difficult because she has to work with a White House president who is also the director of his communications. There are also multiple legal cases which can disrupt the strategy of an administration's communication as well as Cabinet secretaries who are embroiled in their personal controversies. Schlapp has managed to stay focused and on task and work alongside White House teams in political matters, legislative affairs and policy, as well as the wider communications team. The first few months, Schlapp has focused on school safety concerns, addiction, infrastructure, and trade. At the moment she doesn't deal extensively with journalists. But, back in March, her name was floated as a candidate who would succeed Hope Hicks at the Communications Director job. The battle has been bitter. Schlapp's allies began fighting with Tony Sayegh in the press. Schlapp confronted Sayegh following The Washington Examiner printed a bad report about his character.
